The number of animal cruelty cases in Ireland continues to increase, according to new figures.

The Irish gaelic Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ISPCA) said on Friday that they received a staggering 17,338 calls for help last year.

Merely just 18 prosecutions were resolved in the courts in 2018.

Information technology's up on the previous year which saw 16,211 calls received.

The data showed the society carried out iii,494 investigations with 1,102 animals seized or surrendered and taken into their care.

A full of 86,549 calls accept been received past the ISPCA National Brute Cruelty Helpline since 2014, the twelvemonth in which the Animal Wellness and Welfare Act 2013 (AHWA) was introduced.

A total of five,147 animals take been seized or surrendered over the concluding five years and ISPCA Inspectors have been involved with 64 prosecutions for beast cruelty which have been successfully resolved in court.

The ISPCA said that despite being disappointed with the penalties imposed in some cases, they were happy to meet a three year prison term being handed down to Carlow human Jim Kavanagh, who pleaded guilty last October to xxx charges of beast cruelty.

It was the biggest instance in the ISPCA'south history and involved the removal of 340 dogs and 11 horses.

ISPCA Chief Inspector Conor Dowling said: "This item case highlighted in the report was almost iv years coming to a decision.

"The events of that calendar week are all the same fresh in the memories of all those who witnessed those scenes.

"Never in my twenty years' service take I seen such extreme suffering on such a scale.

"Nosotros discovered a number of dead animals scattered around the belongings, some of which had been used to feed the dogs.

"It was only harrowing. Although at that place was an entreatment confronting the severity of the sentence it was dismissed past the Court of Appeal and the original sentence was upheld. The ISPCA felt that this consequence was appropriate."

He added: "We accept never been busier or under then much pressure and our resource are dangerously stretched.

"There are many areas in Ireland we are currently unable to reach and so we need to expand our Inspectorate.

The ISPCA said that despite bang-up progress being made past the charity, they could do a lot more if they had sufficient resource.

The organisation is now highly-seasoned to the Regime and the public for more funding to aid fight animal cruelty.

It currently costs around €l,000 to keep an ISPCA Inspector on the road including vehicle costs, veterinary costs, compatible and equipment, authoritative back up and salary.
